At 300 kilometers (a six-hour boat trip) from Marseille, one can find the isle of Corsica. The east coast of the island has 200 kilometers of fine sandy beaches, with beautiful warm deep blue water, while the west coast has a rocky environment with magnificent bays. Corsica has had a turbulent history. It was occupied by the Romans and later by the republics of Pisa and Genoa, before becoming a part of France. Many places of interest on the island still remind of this.
